For anyone keeping an eye on the Isherwood market, there’s a notable event coming up. The family of Pat White — Isherwood’s partner during the mid‑to‑late 1970s — have decided to release her private collection of more than a hundred works. As a collector, this is the sort of thing you don’t see often.

Pat’s link to Isherwood is well‑known among those who follow his story. They met after she bought a painting at an exhibition in Hoylake in 1975, only to discover it wasn’t signed. One meeting at the Scarisbrick Hotel later, and a four‑year relationship began. During that period she supported him heavily — better materials, the freedom to travel, and a shift in palette that anyone familiar with his Malta‑period work will recognise.

What makes this collection interesting isn’t just the personal connection, but the range. There are early pieces from the 1950s right through to the later European works of the late ’70s. Some have been seen before in Stephen Eckersley’s book, but most have never been available to buy.
